'Life is about rhythm. We vibrate, our hearts are pumping blood, we are a rhythm machine, that's what we are' - Mickey Hart
The djembe or jembe ( jem-bay) is a rope-tuned skin-covered goblet drum played with bare hands, originally from West Africa.
The djembe drum is believed to have originated 400-800 years ago, and was created during the Malian Empire by the Mandé people.
The name of the drum is traced back to a saying from the Bambara people of Mali, Africa. That goes "Anke djé, anke bé" which translates to "everyone gather together in peace" and defines the drum's purpose in calling for community gathering.
In the Bambara language, "djé" is the verb for "gather" and "bé" translates as "peace".
Africans say that the drum contains three spirits. The belief is that the djembe drum contains the spirit of the tree from which it was made, the spirit of the animal whose skin is played, and the spirit of the carver or the one who cut the tree and the people who assemble the drum.
